In this episode, I talk about something that doesn’t replace ERP, but actually makes it more effective: self-compassion. So many people worry that being kind to themselves will weaken recovery, let them off the hook, or make OCD worse. But the truth is that self-criticism often increases anxiety, reinforces the obsession cycle, and leads to more burnout and exhaustion.

I walk you through five simple self-compassion practices that can support ERP and OCD recovery, including acknowledging the discomfort, softening around the physical sensations of anxiety, encouraging yourself instead of blaming yourself, treating yourself like you would a loved one, and normalizing setbacks as part of the recovery process. This work is about learning to respond to hard moments with kindness while still moving forward with your exposures.

Most importantly, I want listeners to know that struggling does not mean they are doing recovery wrong. ERP is brave, hard work, and self-compassion is not a luxury within that process; it is a necessity. The goal is not perfection, but learning how to begin again with kindness every time OCD shows up.
